McKenna prepares for NHL debut with the Toronto Maple Leafs and considers a jersey number change

Gavin McKenna skated with the Toronto Maple Leafs for the first time on Thursday at the team’s development camp, wearing his usual No. 72. He expects that to change by training camp in September because new goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky, a two-time Stanley Cup winner who signed a three-year deal this week, has long worn the same number. McKenna said he is ready to give it up and has not chosen a replacement. His other favorite numbers, 9 and 27, are retired by the franchise.

Exciting Times for a Top Draft Pick

The No. 1 pick enters an uncommon situation for a top selection. Instead of joining a rebuilding club, he steps into a lineup driven by stars Auston Matthews and William Nylander and a front office pushing to win now. Toronto was active on the opening day of free agency, adding seven players, including Bobrovsky and forwards Nick Paul and Jack Roslovic. McKenna welcomed the chance to learn from veterans and said he does not feel pressure to carry the team immediately. He is eager for the challenge of facing Bobrovsky in camp.

The past week has been a whirlwind for the 18-year-old. He was drafted first overall on Friday in Buffalo, with Canadian pop star Justin Bieber announcing the pick. The next day he met Toronto media and fans, then threw the first pitch at the Blue Jays–Rangers game, sailing it high and outside.

Orientation with the organization began Sunday. Prospects attended a town hall with Hall of Famer Mats Sundin, now a senior executive advisor, who discussed life in Toronto’s intense hockey market. McKenna also worked on the ice one-on-one with assistant general manager Hayley Wickenheiser, focusing on details to sharpen before his rookie season. Team staff praised his ability to absorb instruction quickly, highlighting his agility, hockey sense, and calm approach despite heavy attention.

On Thursday at the Ford Performance Centre, eyes were on McKenna throughout drills and rushes, with general manager John Chayka, Sundin, head coach Jim Hiller, and a large group of scouts and staff on hand. The scene underscored how much changed for the franchise after it won the Draft Lottery on May 5.

As he settles into camp, McKenna said being on the ice remains the place he feels most comfortable. He is focused on working, learning from teammates, and making the most of his first days as a Maple Leaf. This is an exciting new chapter for McKenna, and fans are eager to see how he will contribute to the team’s success in the upcoming season.
