Paris, May 28, 2026 — Seventeen-year-old Frenchman Moise Kouame is making a remarkable first impression at Roland Garros, becoming the youngest man to reach the third round of a Grand Slam since 2003.
Playing his first major main draw, Kouame has already posted two standout victories. He opened by eliminating 2022 French Open semifinalist Marin Cilic, 37, then claimed his first five-set win on Thursday in a four-hour, 56-minute duel against Adolfo Daniel Vallejo. He trailed 2-5 in the deciding set before forcing and winning a final-set tiebreak.
Kouame’s Journey in Tennis
Kouame’s coach, Liam Smith, highlighted the teenager’s resilience, saying the ability to compete physically and mentally for five hours at this age is rare and reveals strong competitive instincts. Smith noted that Kouame’s growing poise has been central to his surge, and that recent work has focused on cutting out lapses in concentration and maintaining discipline and intensity from start to finish.
From an initial field of 21 Frenchmen in the men’s draw, only Kouame, currently No. 318 in the ATP Rankings, and No. 90 Quentin Halys remain. Kouame began the year ranked No. 833 and has climbed rapidly. He made his tour-level debut as a qualifier in Montpellier and earned his first ATP Tour win in Miami. The victory over Cilic was only the second tour-level win of his career, achieved against an opponent with more than 600 career match wins.
Smith, who has previously coached Gael Monfils, cautioned against direct comparisons, emphasizing that each player follows his own path and requires a tailored approach. He described Kouame as a hard-working, upbeat teenager who keeps a healthy balance off court, and said the journey is just beginning.
Kouame next faces World No. 36 Alejandro Tabilo. A win would lift the French teenager into the Top 200 for the first time. He is also targeting a place at the season-ending Next Gen ATP Finals.
Looking ahead, Smith sees room for improvement across the board, with particular emphasis on making the serve more consistent and efficient and turning the forehand into a bigger weapon as Kouame learns to play faster and more aggressively. With each match, Kouame showcases his potential and determination, making him a player to watch in the future of tennis.
