New pilot project aims to improve the transition to 11-a-side football for young players

Denmark’s football authorities are set to introduce an innovative approach to youth football by testing a smaller full-squad pitch for youth teams. This initiative aims to facilitate the transition from 8-a-side to 11-a-side matches, making the adjustment smoother for young players. From early 2027 until the end of 2028, it will be recommended that U13 and U14 teams utilize a reduced 11-a-side field for their matches across all competition levels.

Details of the Reduced Pitch Plan

According to the new plan, the spring seasons will be designated for U13 boys and girls, while U14 boys and girls will compete in the autumn seasons. However, it’s important to note that competitions administered by DBU Copenhagen will not be part of this trial.

The dimensions of the trial field will be significantly smaller than a standard 11-a-side pitch, measuring 11 meters shorter and 8 meters narrower. This adjustment is designed to enhance player involvement, increase the number of actions per player, and elevate the overall match intensity during these crucial transition years for young athletes.

This initiative is the result of thorough analysis and extensive work by a dedicated group within the Danish Football Union (DBU), focusing on the shift from 8-a-side to 11-a-side formats. The pilot program will be closely monitored and evaluated throughout the testing period by DBU’s youth and sporting bodies, who will subsequently determine the future direction of this initiative.

For those interested in learning more about this pilot program, an online briefing is scheduled for Monday, 8 June, at 20:00. This session will provide an opportunity for stakeholders to gain insights into the new approach and pose any questions they might have.

This progressive step by Denmark’s football authorities highlights their commitment to improving youth football and ensuring that young players have the best possible environment to develop their skills.
