Rafael Jodar impresses in Roland Garros debut but loses to Zverev in the quarterfinals

Rafael Jodar’s breakout run at Roland Garros ended in the quarter-finals on Tuesday, as the 19-year-old Spaniard fell to second seed Alexander Zverev 7-6(3), 6-1, 6-3 in Paris.

Jodar’s Impressive Journey at Roland Garros

Playing his first Grand Slam quarter-final, Jodar had battled through five-set wins over Alex Michelsen and Pablo Carreno Busta in the previous two rounds. He became just the sixth man since 2000 to reach the Roland Garros quarter-finals on debut, joining the ranks of tennis legends like Juan Carlos Ferrero, Martin Verkerk, Rafael Nadal, Jannik Sinner, and Holger Rune.

Their meeting was the first between Jodar and Zverev at tour level. Zverev, last year’s finalist, utilized his experience and all-court consistency to control the key moments of the match, moving closer to a maiden major title. Jodar, despite the loss, has demonstrated remarkable potential and resilience, establishing himself as a rising star in the tennis world.

Reflecting on the experience, Jodar emphasized that the fortnight reinforced his ability to compete against the sport’s top players. He acknowledged that maintaining a steady level throughout long matches is crucial and expressed a desire to refine different aspects of his game. Additionally, he pointed to Zverev’s composure on big stages as a benchmark he aims to reach.

The teenager leaves Paris with a tour-leading 19 wins on clay this season, which is a testament to his skill and determination. His season highlights include a title in Marrakech, a semi-final appearance in Barcelona, and reaching the quarter-finals at the ATP Masters 1000 events in Madrid and Rome. His impressive run in the French capital has also lifted him to No. 23 in the ATP Live Rankings, marking a significant milestone in his young career.

Looking ahead, Jodar plans to focus on recovery and prepare his body for the grass season. He intends to assess areas for improvement, ensuring that he is ready for the challenges that lie ahead in his burgeoning career.
