The International Chess Federation has appointed Tris Ann Richards as chair of its Commission for Women’s Chess, succeeding Anastasia Sorokina, who stepped down after several years in the role.
Tris Ann Richards: A Leader in Women’s Chess
Richards is a familiar figure in the chess community. She previously served as a councillor on the commission, helping shape its agenda and leading major projects. As president of the Saint Lucia Chess Federation, she stands out as one of the few women heading a national federation. In addition to her leadership roles, Richards holds the prestigious Woman Candidate Master title and is recognized as a FIDE Arbiter and a certified chess instructor.
In 2022, Richards received the FIDE Women’s Award in the Game Changer category for the Americas for her commendable work advancing chess in the region. This recognition underscores her dedication to enhancing the presence and participation of women in chess.
Following her appointment, Richards expressed her honor at taking on this significant role. She credited her guidance from Dana Reizniece and Anastasia Sorokina and pledged to continue her efforts to advance opportunities for women in chess worldwide. FIDE President Arkady Dvorkovich thanked Sorokina for her years of service and warmly welcomed Richards, highlighting her extensive experience and long-standing commitment to chess development.
