The World Junior Summer Showcase opened Sunday in Windsor, Ontario, launching a week of evaluations that will help set the rosters for the United States, Canada, Finland, and Sweden at the 2027 IIHF World Junior Championship in Edmonton and Red Deer from Dec. 26 to Jan. 5.
Highlights from the Opening Day
The United States’ Team Blue started fast with a 6-1 win over Sweden at WFCU Centre, highlighted by Wyatt Cullen’s strong debut down the middle. Recently drafted 10th overall by Nashville, Cullen has spent much of the past season on the right wing but centered the top line on Day 1. Skating with Michael Berchild (Hurricanes) and Ethan Wyttenbach (Flames), the trio produced seven points, with Cullen collecting a goal and an assist. He also took shifts with Carter Sanderson, who finished with a hat trick, and the mix-and-match looks suggested Cullen can drive play with different linemates. U.S. coach Adam Nightingale noted Cullen’s hockey sense and physical maturity as reasons he is a serious option at center as the staff continues to sort roles.
Sweden used the opener to gauge new scoring options with two headline names likely unavailable for the World Juniors. Forwards Ivar Stenberg and Viggo Bjorck were not invited to the showcase because the staff expects both to chase NHL roster spots this fall. Stenberg, drafted second overall by the Sharks in 2026, signed his entry-level deal on July 2 and is projected to compete for a full-time role. Bjorck, taken eighth by the Jets and signed July 13, will also have a chance to make the big club in camp. Their potential absences would be notable after Sweden’s gold at the 2026 tournament, but the group is leaning on last year’s structure while auditioning new finishers. Center Theo Stockselius scored Sweden’s lone goal in the loss to USA Blue.
Finland opened with a 4-1 victory over USA White, setting an early tone built on work rate and confidence. Despite missing top defenseman Samu Alalauri (Blackhawks, third round, 2026) due to illness, Finland jumped to a 4-0 lead in the first period and managed the game from there. Coach Ville Mäntymaa emphasized relentless effort both with and without the puck and wants his team to show courage in tough matchups now so it’s prepared for December. Goaltender Jester Rossi (2027 draft eligible) impressed, and the top two lines—featuring Rasmus Kamarainen and Aapo Katavisto (both 2027 eligible)—delivered the kind of net-drive goals the staff is seeking. Alalauri could return Monday against USA Blue.
Sanderson provided one of the day’s standout performances with three goals for USA Blue against Sweden. Playing on a line with Brooks Rogowski (Canucks) and Casey Mutryn (Kraken), the trio totaled seven points and set the forechecking tone. Sanderson’s goals came from the interior, reflecting his strength around the crease and timing in traffic. With an 11-forward rotation offering different looks, he showed he can adapt with various partners. The Penguins’ 2025 sixth-round pick is slated to skate for Calgary in the WHL in 2026-27 before heading to the University of North Dakota in 2027-28. Nightingale pointed to Sanderson’s competitiveness as the trait that will matter most in the push for a World Junior roster spot.
