Young Daniel Merida wins his first ATP Tour title in Croatia

Daniel Merida captured his first ATP Tour title at the Croatia Open in Umag, winning the trophy in just his seventh tour-level event. The 21-year-old Spaniard defeated Damir Dzumhur in a three-set final, recovering after serving for the championship in the second set and being pushed to a decider.

Merida’s Journey and Future Aspirations

He described the breakthrough as a major milestone and said the victory strengthens his drive to keep improving. Merida highlighted the constant support of his family—his father, mother, and brother—and noted that his girlfriend was with him during the week in Umag.

Merida’s path into tennis began with padel in childhood before he moved onto the tennis court. He spent much of his youth around the sport, with his father closely involved in practices and travel during his early development.

Reflecting on his first ATP final earlier this season in Bucharest, Merida said the key lesson was to start matches on the front foot and trust his firepower—an approach he leaned on during his title run in Croatia.

On court, he sees himself as an aggressive ball-striker who looks to hit through opponents. Away from competition, he prefers a low-key routine, spending time with family and friends.

Merida is an avid gamer and enjoys both playing and watching video games. If he were not a professional tennis player, he believes he would likely work in gaming, possibly through streaming or related roles.

He planned a modest celebration with his girlfriend before traveling to the next tournament, aiming to mark the achievement despite a quick turnaround. The final took place on July 18, 2026, marking a significant moment in his burgeoning career.
