ALEXANDER ZVEREV TIGHTENS RACE FOR ATP NO. 1 SPOT
Alexander Zverev has tightened the race for the top spot in the PIF ATP Rankings after capturing his second major title at the US Open. He remains No. 2, but the gap to leader Jannik Sinner is down to 1,810 points with two months left in the season. Points Defended and Upcoming Challenges
How many points each player must defend will likely decide the run-in. Zverev is due to defend 1,080 points through year’s end, while Sinner has 3,550 to protect. That imbalance sets up several moments when the standings could shift.
Event by event, Sinner has 500 points to defend in Beijing, 50 in Shanghai, 500 in Vienna, 1,000 at the Rolex Paris Masters, and 1,500 at the Nitto ATP Finals. He won Beijing, Vienna, Paris, and the Finals last year, with only a third-round exit in Shanghai. Zverev’s slate is lighter: 100 points in Beijing, 50 in Shanghai, 330 in Vienna, 400 in Paris, and 200 at the ATP Finals.
Both players dropped in the third round in Shanghai last season, leaving each with only 50 points to defend there. A strong result in China could, therefore, be pivotal. Paris presents another potential swing: Sinner is carrying the full 1,000 points from last year’s title, while Zverev is defending 400 after a semifinal finish. The final major adjustment comes at the ATP Finals, where Sinner banked the maximum 1,500 points last year by going unbeaten, and Zverev earned 200. If the margin remains tight into November, Turin could be decisive.
There is also a minor accounting wrinkle for Zverev. When his 2025 Beijing result comes off, 40 points from this year’s United Cup would move into his ranking as a next-best result. Any haul in Beijing that exceeds 40 points would replace that figure again.
Zverev is pursuing a milestone as he attempts to become the 30th player to reach World No. 1 in the history of the PIF ATP Rankings. Sinner is aiming to end the year on top for a second time after securing the year-end No. 1 in 2024 and accumulating 90 weeks at the summit. The race for the top promises to be thrilling as the season winds down, and fans eagerly await the results of these key tournaments.
