Alexander Zverev is closing in on another deep run at Roland Garros after stopping 19-year-old Rafael Jodar’s breakout in the quarterfinals on Tuesday. The second seed will play for a place in the final against the winner of the night-session meeting between 19-year-old Joao Fonseca and 20-year-old Jakub Mensik on Court Philippe-Chatrier.
Young Talent Shines at Roland Garros
The surge of youth has been a theme in Paris. Jodar, Fonseca, and Mensik are three of the four highest-ranked players aged 20 and under in the PIF ATP Rankings, alongside American Learner Tien. Their progress highlights the strength of the next wave on tour. Zverev noted the depth of young talent but emphasized that his focus remains on his own level and execution.
Zverev’s victory over Jodar came after an early scare in their first career meeting. The Spaniard, who leads the tour with 19 clay-court wins this season and captured an ATP 250 title in Marrakech in April, jumped ahead 5-2 in the opening set. Zverev steadied, took the tiebreak, and pulled away for a 7-6(3), 6-1, 6-3 result.
The German is chasing his first major trophy two years after finishing runner-up in Paris in 2024. With top seed Jannik Sinner out in the second round and 24-time major champion Novak Djokovic eliminated by Fonseca in the third, the draw has opened up for the No. 2 seed. Even so, Zverev has played down any added pressure and says the only priority is the next opponent.
Through five matches this fortnight, Zverev has dropped just one set. He reached the Australian Open semifinals in January, losing to Carlos Alcaraz, and exited Roland Garros in the quarterfinals last year. The three-time major finalist now stands one win from another shot at a Grand Slam title match.
As Zverev continues his quest for glory at Roland Garros, fans are eager to see how he will navigate the challenges posed by the young stars emerging on the ATP tour. The excitement surrounding this year’s tournament underscores the dynamic shifts in competitive tennis.
