The long-running chess summer camp at Skanderup Efterskole opened on July 7 after selling out on March 2 in just two hours. This year’s edition brings together 101 young players from across the country.
Travel to the camp proved more eventful than planned for a group of participants when the rail operator canceled two reserved carriages at short notice. The group’s trip leader, Viktor, guided 28 travelers through an extra change at Kolding Station, and everyone arrived safely despite crowded trains that forced some to sit in the corridors.
Exciting Camp Activities and Traditions
By late afternoon, the school was buzzing with returning campers reuniting and first-time attendees settling in. An official welcome took place at 17:00, highlighting the camp’s focus on community, strong chess experiences, and shared responsibility across ages. The traditional group photo followed, this year in red and white.
Routines fell into place quickly. The canteen opened early, and the slush ice machine was ready well before dinner. The evening meal was prepared and served by Ramona and Kjeld, and one seasoned participant, Alexander, marked his 18th birthday at the camp with music and celebration. Another tradition also began for the year as Nor and Isabella received the first “cuddle bear” recognitions.
The opening-night blitz tournament split the field into ten groups. Results were as follows:
- Group A: Vitus won with maximum points.
- Group B: Leia led with 8 out of 9.
- Group C: Iðunn, Xavi, and Frida shared first on 7 out of 9.
- Group D: Vuk won with maximum points.
- Group E: Maja, Noah, and Eik shared first.
- Group F: Lukas Cronwald edged Viktor Kongensgård for first.
- Group G: Emil Bertl-Eberle finished first.
- Group H: Marcus Pham finished first.
- Group I: Hannah Suralski finished first.
- Group J: Thorbjørn Eriksen won with maximum points.
The night wrapped up with muffins and the camp’s first evening get-together, where participants also watched Norway eliminate five-time world champions Brazil at this year’s football World Cup.
The chess summer camp is now fully underway, promising an exciting season filled with strategic games, camaraderie, and memorable experiences for all attendees.
