Danish chess success: Jonas Bjerre qualifies for the World Championship after an impressive performance at the European Championship in Poland

The European Individual Chess Championship has concluded in Katowice, Poland, after 11 rounds with two rest days. The event crowned a new continental champion and determined the 20 players who qualified for the 2027 World Cup.

In a notable upset, IM Roman Dehtiarov, rated 2452, took the title. He won his final-round game with the white pieces against David Antón Guijarro to finish on 9 points out of 11, claiming clear first ahead of grandmasters Nijat Abasov (2586), Aydin Suleymanli (2653), and Mahammad Muradli (2605).

There was plenty to cheer about from a Danish perspective. GM Jonas Bjerre scored 8/11 and placed 14th on tiebreaks, securing one of the World Cup spots. GM Mads Andersen slipped in the last round and ended on 7/11; a win would have qualified him as well. Vitus Bondo Medhus earned his International Master title in round 10 and finished on 6.5/11, the same score as IM Filip Boe Olsen.
