Djokovic sets record with 32 wins at the China Open in Beijing

Novak Djokovic set a new Open Era benchmark in Beijing on Sunday, extending his perfect start at the China Open to 32 matches with a three-set win over top seed Alexander Zverev, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, to reach the semifinals.

The 39-year-old moved past Rafael Nadal for the best opening streak by a man at a single event. Nadal began his Roland Garros career with 31 straight victories and ultimately compiled a 112-4 record there with 14 titles, but it is the 31-match start that Djokovic has now surpassed.

Djokovic’s Impressive Track Record in Beijing

A six-time champion in Beijing, Djokovic returned this season for the first time since 2015, when he claimed his sixth trophy at the tournament. He has gone the distance in his past two matches in the Chinese capital, winning in three sets against Bu Yunchaokete and then Zverev. His next opponent is former world No. 1 Daniil Medvedev.

Djokovic’s Beijing run now tops the list of best openings at a single tournament in the Open Era, ahead of Nadal’s 31 at Roland Garros, the 23-match starts by John McEnroe in Milan and Mats Wilander in Barcelona, and McEnroe’s 22 in Sydney. This achievement not only highlights Djokovic’s remarkable skill but also solidifies his legacy as one of the greatest players in tennis history.

As he progresses through the tournament, fans are eager to see if he can continue his winning streak and add another title to his impressive collection. With his consistent performance and experience, Djokovic remains a formidable contender in the world of tennis.
